Activities - After School Program

vo In December 2005, Han Bai Kung Fu (HBKF) started an after-school martial arts program (ASMAP) at the Bohrer Park Activity Center in Montgomery County to serve students in the Gaithersburg High School cluster, MD, with $5,000 funding from the Montgomery County Collaboration Council for Children, Youth and Families. The ASMAP was a great success with many positive feedbacks from parents and teachers as well as local officials. See the Gazette News here

In early September 2006, HBKF received for FY 07 a $10,000 continuation grant from the Collaboration Council, based on the positive performance from the first year's contract for services. See the Gazette News here

In October 2006, HBKF received an $18,000 award from the FY 07 Joint County Gang Prevention Initiative/Community Mobilization and Outreach Grants to expand the ASMAP to Summit Hall Elementary School and Forest Oak Middle School, besides the class at Bohrer Park Activity Center for Gaithersburg High School students.

Based on the success gained in FY 06 pilot program at Gaithersburg High School, the After-School Martial Arts Year Round Program ASMAPyr continues to promote character development through the principles of Kung Fu (integrity, responsibility, self-discipline, self-control…) and provides opportunities for youth to mentor younger students and develop positive social relationships around shared interests.

In the summer of 2007, ASMAP provided a martial arts summer program for Gaithersburg HS students under the sponsorship of the Collaboration Council for Children, Youth and Families of Montgomery County, MD. The program attracted more students, almost doubled the roster from previous year. Some graduated students who had attended ASMAP since its beginning still returned to the class to practice and assist newcomers.

The ASMAP continued to serve Gaithersburg HS students at Bohrer Activity Center in Gaithersburg, MD until 2012.

From 2014, the after-school martial arts program moved to Sligo Midde School in Silver Spring, MD.
